Pattern Recognition Activity
Overview
Children encounter patterns everywhere - numbers, shapes, sounds, movements, routines, and even the way things happen around them. Recognising a pattern means noticing what changes, what stays the same, and using that information to work out what is likely to happen next.
In this activity, children will explore different sequences and practise identifying the rule behind each one. They will begin with simple visual patterns and gradually move into number and everyday-life sequences.
The activity encourages children to observe carefully, recognise patterns, make predictions, explain their thinking, and eventually create patterns of their own.
Materials
- Paper or printed activity sheets
- Pencils or pens
- A board or large sheet of paper
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Directions
1. Start with a simple visual pattern
Ask: βWhat do you think comes next?β Give children time to observe before answering. Once they answer, ask: βHow did you know?β The goal is not simply to get the correct answer - encourage children to explain the rule they noticed.
2. Try a different pattern
Ask: βWhat comes next?β After they answer, ask them to describe the repeating pattern. You can say: βLook carefully. How many red circles appear before the blue one?β
3. Move from objects to numbers
Ask: βWhat comes next?β Then ask: βWhat is happening to the numbers each time?β Allow children to discover that the numbers are increasing by two.
4. Connect patterns to everyday life
Wake up β Brush your teeth β Get dressed β Eat breakfast β ______
5. Let children become the pattern creators

Teacher Tips
Encourage explanation, not guessing. Ask βWhy?β A child who explains the rule demonstrates deeper understanding.
Accept different interpretations. Some sequences have more than one rule.
AI Connection
Pattern recognition is fundamental to artificial intelligence. AI systems analyse data and identify patterns to make predictions. In this activity, children practise: Observe β Identify patterns β Find the rule β Make a prediction.
