Data Sorting Activity
📘 Primary / JHS⏱ 15–30 min🖨 Printable🧩 Everyday materials
Overview
Data is information. Before we can make sense of information, we often need to organise it. In this activity, children work with everyday objects, pictures, numbers, or information and practise sorting, grouping, classifying, and explaining their choices.
Materials
Basic materials: paper or printed cards, pencils or pens, a board and marker. Optional materials: bottle caps, buttons, stones, leaves, or picture cards.
Directions
1. Give students a collection of objects
Place a mixture of objects in front of the students (e.g., bottle caps of different colours). Ask: “How would you organise these?”
2. Let students create their own groups
Students might group by colour, size, or shape. Ask: “Why did you put these together?”
Challenges
🟢 Challenge 1: Sort It - Create initial groups from a mixed collection.
🟡 Challenge 2: Sort It Another Way - Re-sort the exact same items using a new rule.
AI Connection
AI systems organize vast amounts of information into categories. Sorting objects builds foundational thinking for machine learning classification.
